IRVING – Cowboys starting tight end Dan Campbell will miss the rest of the season with an injury to his right foot, coach Bill Parcells said Wednesday.
Campbell injured his foot on a nine-yard catch late in the fourth quarter of Monday’s game against Washington.
“He does a lot of the dirty work,” Parcells said of Campbell. “He’s a player that is very difficult to replace.”
Parcells also confirmed that starting right cornerback Pete Hunter is out for the season with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament.
Both players were placed on injured reserve.
Moving quickly to fill the tight end void, the Cowboys signed Mikhael Ricks, who was with the New York Jets in training camp. Cornerback Tyrone Williams, an eight-year veteran, worked out for the Cowboys on Wednesday and was awaiting results of a physical before possibly signing.
The Cowboys do not play Sunday, and Parcells said the extra week of practice will help whomever signs get accustomed to the system.
Ricks, a wide receiver at Stephen F. Austin, has caught 155 passes in his seven seasons with San Diego, Kansas City and Detroit. He caught 37 passes for 434 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions last year.
Williams started six games for Atlanta last season, but he was suspended by then-coach Dan Reeves for conduct detrimental to the team Oct. 1. From 1999-2002, he was a full-time starter in Green Bay and had 19 interceptions.
Rookie cornerback Jacques Reeves, who replaced Hunter against the Redskins, becomes the starter and rookie Nate Jones will take over as nickel corner.
Parcells said rookie Bruce Thornton, who he wanted to activate against the Redskins, will become the backup for Reeves and Terence Newman.
The Cowboys released running back Derrick Knight from the practice squad to make room for another player. Parcells indicated the team would have a new tight end and cornerback by the end of this week.
