Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said Friday that newly acquired cornerback Tyrone Williams has looked impressive in practice.
"He's heady," Parcells told reporters in Irving. "He's already learned our coverages. He knows how to play."
The Cowboys signed Williams on Thursday to fill the roster spot held by starting right corner Pete Hunter, who sustained a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of the 21-18 victory over Washington on Monday.
Hunter's injury left the Cowboys with a rookie, seventh-round pick Jacques Reeves, starting opposite second-year man Terence Newman.
Williams, 31, is expected to be the fourth corner on passing downs when the Cowboys (2-1) play the New York Giants on Oct. 10 at Texas Stadium.
But the ninth-year player from Nebraska said his goal is to eventually start, which is what he did during six of his seven seasons with Green Bay and in six games last season for Atlanta.
"I've always viewed myself as a starter," Williams said. "You've got to come in with the mind-set of being the top guy and working to be the top guy."
The Falcons released Williams on June 1. He was at his home in Florida when the Cowboys called.
Teams passed on Williams because of off-the-field problems he experienced in Green Bay and Atlanta.
Williams was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife in Green Bay. The couple has since reconciled, he said.
Williams signed a five-year contract worth $14 million with Atlanta last season. He started the first four games, but the Falcons suspended him for one game after he got into an argument with then-defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. After returning to play two games, Williams was deactivated for the team's final nine games.
Those incidents, however, didn't stop former Packers general manager Ron Wolf from recommending Williams to Parcells. Wolf drafted Williams in the third round in 1996.
"I trust Ron Wolf's judgment," Parcells said. "I asked him how I would do with this guy and Ron said, 'I don't think you'll have a problem.'"
Williams won a Super Bowl with Green Bay as a rookie. He played in 111 of a possible 112 games with the Packers, recording 19 interceptions.
Notes: The NFL has fined safety Roy Williams $7,500 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Redskins receiver Laveranues Coles on Monday. ...Starting right guard Andre Gurode has returned to practice after missing the past two games with a knee injury. ... Running back Keylon Kincade, from SMU, and cornerback Lenny Williams have been added to the practice squad after guard Thomas Herrion and running back Derrick Knight were released.
